Can Men be a Leader?

People are already used to see men as a leader in the society. Some people are curious if most men deserved to be a leader. They might even question the qualities of men if they are good enough for that position. In politics, men outnumbered women in becoming a leader.

I don’t have anything against men becoming a leader, as long as he has the skills and qualifications to become one.

The simple answer is yes. Men can be a leader because of his decisive and strong attitude in handling situations. Men have the desire to work hard especially in crucial times. They have a better vision and knows how to improve things. Men just don’t motivate other people but, they also know how to connect with them.

Understanding What is a Leader?

First, we need to understand what it means to be a leader. A leader is a passionate person who loves to work and uplift other people. They are eager to help their subordinates in times of problem. I have read a book that said,

“I have found, however, that the most effective leaders are alike in one crucial way: they all have a high degree of what has come to be known as emotional intelligence.”

A leader must have the ability to express themselves fully to other people. To achieve that, they must know themselves first. Great leaders know who they are. They know how to communicate and bring good judgment in different situations.

Every leader must have a guiding vision and have a clear idea of what they want to achieve. Despite the setbacks and failures, a leader must possess the strength to pursue that vision. A quote coming from a great leader said,

The world is out of control, a leader must know how to lead and never be absorbed by the challenges that they are facing. Becoming a leader isn’t easy at all, it is normal for them to commit mistakes sometimes.

Even the great leaders that we had in the past made some bad decisions. So how did they become a great leader? simple, they always learn from their mistakes and keeps on growing. Being a leader also means that you need to take the risk and make mistakes to master leadership skills. The quality of life sometimes depends on the leader that you have in your environment.

Why Men Can be a Leader?

Basically, not just with men, but every gender deserves to become a leader. I just want to avoid gender stereotyping. Men and women have different leadership style, but just for this article, we are going to talk about why men can be a leader.

To understand why men can be a leader, it is helpful to understand their traits. As I’ve said in my answer paragraph above, men are decisive and have a strong attitude in handling situations. That’s one of the main reasons why men deserve to become a leader. The masculine traits that men have emphasized mean he knows how to control things.

Whether a man is leading a company or a government leader, the best trait that every man has is their strong quality to positively interact with his people. The strong qualities of a man make him easier to lead his people and inspire them in their work.

When a man sees that something is wrong or something has to be done quickly, he won’t disregard it and make immediate actions. One component of a man that makes him a good leader is he knows self-regulation. Self-regulation means they know how to think before they act.

In times of crisis, they accept responsibility for what is happening and blame no one even in the face of failure. Men have a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Sometimes, they go beyond that actual task that is needed to be done.

Men are full of self-confidence when leading and it is a sign of strong leadership. When a leader lacks self-confidence, it would reflect that he is unworthy of that position hence it will show a weak leadership image.

How do Men become Leaders?

For a man to become a leader, there are a lot of things to be done and it could take years before people can identify you as a leader.

In my experience, I became a leader in our community for almost 13 years. It was stressful but it was also fulfilling because I helped and inspired a lot of people. I try to learn all the fundamentals to become an inspiring leader. Of course, I have a lot of mentors who helped me along the way.

As a man, I started doing leadership work in our community to build a reputation. When I see problems, I propose ideas and try to apply them if they work. I connect with people and look for connections because I believe that they have different talents that they can contribute. I became a leader and was acknowledged in our community because I lead and serve wholeheartedly. In the very first place, I never wanted the recognition, I just felt happy helping other people

Leadership Skills that Men Should Have

This is the list of leadership skills that men should have.

1. Being Passionate To Your Work

As a leader, you should love what you are doing, and that is to lead. You must fully be engaged to achieve those goals. There is a difference between a leader who just leads because of their title and a leader who uplifts other people and leads with passion.

A passionate leader starts with you. You need to have a profound understanding of your work and your people. Never be tired of learning about the tasks that are needed to be done. Don’t look for mistakes that your people have committed. Instead, teach them how to do it.

Always remember to put some knowledge in your work because the reality of being a leader is that, anyone can be a passionate leader if they know what they’re doing.

2. A Clear Vision for Your Goal

A leader with a vision is essential for the success of any group or organization. Being a leader, you must have a clear vision for the goal. You need to concentrate on the most important tasks that need to be done. To follow that vision, you must have a well-defined plan and purpose. Not just for yourself, but your people as well.

Leaders must have the vision to know what type of leader they must aspire to be. The vision that you have defines your identity and principle as a leader. With great vision, it could help you attract people to follow the plans and dreams that you want to accomplish. Being a leader that has a powerful vision can motive the performance of your people.  

3. Great Decision-Making

To determine the effectiveness of a leader, one of the skills is to have great decision-making. A leader with great decision-making ability can make a quality effect on several situations. If you have decision-making skills, it also means you are a clear thinker and knows how to solve problems.

Wrong decisions can bring consequences to you as a leader and to your people. People will lose their trust in you because of your bad decision. To make great decisions, always use your knowledge and experience. Some decisions are simple and automatic but some could be very difficult. You could also seek advice from an expert if you are unsure of your decision.

Every leader makes thousands of decisions every day, and most of them have a great impact on you or the company.

4. Self-Confidence

Excellent leadership requires self-confidence. Being a leader, you are always exposed to other people. You lead, speak and train people for them to be better at their tasks. If you lack confidence as a leader, people will feel that you are unworthy.

A leader that has self-confidence thinks and acts positively about the future of the company that he leads. Lacking self-confidence is not that big of a problem because it is something you can improve and build. Not every leader in this world is born to have self-confidence, some were trained and educated before becoming a leader.

Know how to identify and resolve your self-doubt. Every leader has self-doubt and insecurities, it doesn’t go away. Just make sure you take pride in what you do.

5. Encouraging Your People

A great leader has the skill to always encourage their people. A leader must learn how to craft the next leader through his people. Before you encourage your people, set yourself as an example. The actions that you perform will set the standard that people will see from you.

Next, avoid observing their mistakes instead, recognize their strengths. Don’t do anything that would discourage them to work. Each one of them has their talents so always allow them to participate and show their skills.

If you want to encourage them, don’t apply fear. Instead of fear, inspire or empower them. Help them to grow and show appreciation for all their achievements. Lastly, respect them as a person so that they will respect you as a leader.

6. Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is the ability to understand yourself. Being a leader is quite stressful, there are times that you don’t know how to control your emotions and feelings. As a leader, you need to identify your position in society. Through the help of self-awareness, you better understand what you feel and why you feel it.

When you see the uniqueness in yourself, you can empower other people by leading them. It’s impossible to become a great leader if you don’t know yourself well. To make changes in the place where you are leading, learn how to assess yourself.

7. Always Value Honesty

The outcome of honesty is trust. If you want to work successfully with your team, always value honesty within your group. Solid leadership prioritizes honesty within the environment. To avoid major issues of dishonesty in a company, a leader must practice honesty so that your people will trust you.

A leader that lives a life full of honesty means that you are real to yourself and others. You know how to speak and lead the truth which can also inspire your people. Through honesty, you’re proving to your people that you can be trusted. Without the trust of your people, you cannot hope to work successfully with them.
